WHAT NEXT?
Now that you have assessed the puppy and you have begun to get a feel for what the problem may be, let’s go back to our original premise that you are alone in the middle of the night on a holiday weekend with a raging snowstorm outside. What do you do now?
We all know that our first step would be to call our vet, but what do we do if our vet is unavailable, or we can’t get to his or her office? What then? Do you sit by and watch your puppy die, or do you get aggressive and try to save your puppy? Do you assume that losing 30% of your pups is Mother Nature’s way? Do you let your fear of procedures that are usually performed by trained medical personnel keep you from learning those skills? The decision is yours to make.
As you begin to work hard to save this puppy, take a deep breath and tell yourself that your chances of saving him are far from 100 percent. Don’t expect that putting your puppy into intensive care is a guarantee that he will live. Go into it with the expectation that he will likely die and the hope that he will live. If our expectations are high every time, it gets to be too emotionally draining every time one of our pups dies. You can do nothing but your best for your puppies, but none of us are miracle workers — there will be puppies that will die no matter what we do. I lose puppies every year. There are puppies with problems that are simply not compatible with life. Sometimes the fight to save the puppy is really about knowing you’ve done your best. That puppy, in all likelihood, is here because you planned a breeding. Give him every chance for life, and try to let the fact that you did your best be your emotional reward; not saving the puppy, but knowing you did your best.
